John, I believe healthcare is a human right. Every American deserves the ability to see a doctor nearby when they are sick or have a medical emergency. Yet Republicans in Washington are doing everything they can to stop the American people from exercising this right. Last summer, Republicans voted on a "big, ugly bill" that cut healthcare and will strip millions of Americans of their health insurance. And when Republicans had to choose between extending Affordable Care Act subsidies or closing down the government, they chose the latter with ease. Now, we're living in a reality where healthcare costs are skyrocketing, people are having to choose between buying lifesaving medication or paying rent, and hospitals are losing the critical funding they need to keep their doors open. Everyone across the country is feeling the effects of bad GOP policy, but no one is getting hit harder than rural America. Here in Kentucky, almost 50% of our population lives in a rural community. I have learned during my time as governor exactly the needs of these communities, and let me tell you: the local hospital is more than just a healthcare hub. In any typical rural community, the local hospital is the second largest employer. They are the driving force behind rural economies – not only do their staff participate in the economy by going to coffee shops, groceries stores, and more, but when they help heal those who are sick, they are helping them get back to work faster or not have to take time off. When our population is healthier, our economy is stronger. But the Trump administration has become the biggest threat to rural America. Because of the "big, ugly bill," 35 hospitals in Kentucky may close completely or be significantly hurt by underfunding. 200,000 Kentuckians could lose their health insurance. People will have to start driving further away for the care they need, and frankly, it downright angers me to watch politicians in Washington allow this to happen. This is exactly why we need people-first leaders in our government. We need leaders who will listen to their constituents and stand with them as they make changes in our government that will address the problems they face daily. No American should have to face these rising healthcare costs while their representatives in Congress continue to do nothing. Will you help me elect leaders to Congress who will lead with common sense and compassion and find real solutions to our healthcare crisis?
