A big part of my job is looking at our budget and deciding what our campaign can afford – and when we can afford it. Should we hire organizing staff this quarter? Should we get more yard signs? Should we scale up our digital advertising? Should we launch TV ads?

The truth is, the answer to a lot of those questions comes down to how much we raise from emails just like this one.

Now that we’re in 2026, our spending decisions carry a lot more weight. I know November might seem far away, but we have a lot of work to do in the next few months to keep our momentum growing and build the kind of campaign it will take to flip IA-03 blue and help Democrats retake House control.

Here’s where you come in, John. We’re coming up on our mid-January fundraising benchmark, which is an important time for Sarah and me to assess our pacing so we can decide what we have the resources to do this quarter.

If we exceed our goal? Great! I can tell Sarah at our mid-month fundraising meeting that we can move forward with our plans earlier than usual, putting us even closer to flipping Iowa blue and defeating Zach Nunn.

If we fall short? Well, then we need to make some tough calls about what parts of our budget we need to cut. In a race that we’re expecting to come down to just a handful of votes, that could be make-or-break for our odds of winning.
