Today, the 2026 legislative session in Virginia is officially starting.
This is an exciting time. In November, voters elected our first-ever woman governor and the first-ever Muslim woman as lieutenant governor. Not to mention, nearly 60% of House Democrats are women, the largest number ever in Virginia history (There are more women in the House of Delegates caucus than there are Republicans total!!) This means we have a unique opportunity to deliver real progress for the people of Virginia – including protecting reproductive freedom and access to abortion once and for all.
This week, Senate and House Democrats are expected to move quickly on priority constitutional amendments, including the amendment to enshrine abortion rights in the Virginia Constitution, alongside amendments on voting rights restoration and marriage equality.
That is what happens when pro-choice leaders are in charge. They actually get to work on the issues that matter most to the people they are meant to represent.
Our work does not end here. Once our amendment passes this second time, it will proceed to the final stage: appearing on the ballot. In November, voters will have the final say in protecting abortion rights.
