President Trump, this isn't the solution...
Let's be clear, unleashing federal troops into our cities will not solve gun violence.
John, Trump announced that he will send a surge of federal agents into U.S. cities to fight violent crime as part of "Operation LeGend." According to Trump, these agents — who are not trained for community intervention — will help reduce gun violence and address unsolved gun homicides.
Chicago and cities across the country are in pain. They are continuously devastated by everyday gun violence, and they need solutions now. But if Trump truly cared about reducing violence, he would work with local leaders to fund programs that work with impacted communities and residents to prevent violence and reduce conflict.
We know all too well that more policing is not the solution. This is a political stunt — and a harmful and undemocratic one at that.
This initiative is a naked attempt to politicize the violence that devastates communities of color, while emphasizing "Law and Order" over meaningful solutions — like the legislative solutions that have long been languishing on Sen. Mitch McConnell’s desk. Please join us in telling Trump to invest in our communities, not policing!

On Tuesday, Ohio state legislators heard an NRA-backed bill that would make it easier for teachers to carry guns on school grounds — without proper training. This dangerous bill guts the minimum training requirement for teachers to carry guns.
Testifying in opposition to SB 317 were Brady Ohio Chapter Members Erick Bellomy and Elizabeth Overmier!
Make no mistake, arming teachers is not the solution. Extensive research proves that adding guns to schools only increases the risk of harm to students, and that's especially true for students of color, who disproportionately face hostile classroom environments.
Guns will not make our students or teachers safer.

Biden Battleground, Pennsylvania: Common-Sense Solutions For the Commonwealth
We convened an expert panel of Pennsylvanians from the medical community, Congress, and the organizing field to discuss solutions to curb gun violence in Pennsylvania. Moderated by Brady President Kris Brown, speakers Sen. Bob Casey, Sen. Chris Coons, Dr. Dorothy Johnson-Speight, and student activist Vrajesh “Jojo” Dalwadi discuss why the 2020 election is so important to address this pressing issue.
So-called “Stand Your Ground” laws legally allow a person to use a firearm to shoot and kill another person, at any time. They were thrust into the national spotlight after the 2012 shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin and continue to be controversial. We're revisiting this episode where we spoke with Dr. Caroline Light, an author and historian whose work focuses on America’s obsession with violent self-defense and the dangerous myth of “good guys with guns.”

Jim Reichardt first got involved with Brady 37 years ago when it was still called Handgun Control, Inc. As a successful lawyer in Chicago, early on, Jim recognized the devastating effect of gun violence and wanted to be part of the solution. He has been a faithful contributor to Brady ever since. Jim remains hopeful about the gun violence prevention movement because so many young people have joined the cause.
As he tells it, “Shortly after the Parkland, Florida, massacre, there was a large rally in Chicago’s Union Park that my wife and I attended. We were heartened by the observation that the people on stage and at the microphones were almost all high school students. In America, school children are now demanding to be kept safe. It grieves my soul that it has come to that — that the ‘mature’ generations of parents and political leaders have utterly failed to keep children safe in their schools.”

Last Friday, America was heartbroken to hear of the passing of Rep. John Lewis. Rep. Lewis was a tireless advocate for equality, freedom, justice, and among other things, preventing gun violence.
It was Rep. Lewis who in 2016 led a sit-in on the floor of the House of Representatives after Congress failed to strengthen our gun laws following the Sandy Hook massacre. It was Rep. Lewis who joined arms with a Brady coalition of victims and survivors of gun violence last summer to demand a meeting with Sen. Mitch McConnell following one of the deadliest summers in U.S. history.
Through events like these, Rep. Lewis taught us that we can never give up, and that our voice is our power, and that we are stronger together.
Our movement is forever grateful for Rep. Lewis' fierce conviction and his ability to inspire everyone he met to speak up and get out when injustices were happening.
