Dear John,

One year ago, Jose helped fight the Eaton Fire as a member of Growlersburg Conservation Camp. Today, he’s home and working to continue his firefighting career.

In an op-ed for CalMatters, Jose shares his story, reflecting on what it was like to fight the LA fires while incarcerated.

“When people think of incarcerated people, they often see us as a danger, with our past mistakes magnified. Amid the smoke, ash, and destruction of the LA fires, people saw us as heroes, recognizing the good we could achieve when given a second chance.”
