I wrote Paper Girl for the same reason I’m running for Congress: Trump’s administration is leaving Americans behind, and someone needs to step up. As a journalist and author for forty years, I've always sought to hold power accountable and tell the truth, even when it’s uncomfortable. From covering stories about addiction to offshoring jobs to civil rights, I've never been afraid to ruffle feathers. I've always jumped in headfirst, unafraid to tell the untold stories, and nothing could have prepared me more for this next role. My whole career has been spent talking to real people about the hard issues — issues of addiction, poverty, gender identity, and abortion. I learned how to research and understand the root cause of those big problems. I’m also not afraid to change my mind when I learn more. Now I want to apply what I've learned over the years to fixing our broken system.
