An alarming new report shows that pay-to-play politics is alive and well here in California’s First Congressional District…

Hi John,

I’m Alex Brown, Audrey Denney’s campaign manager. I’m writing to you today because I’m angry, and you deserve to know why.

A bombshell report just came out from the Sacramento Bee that pulls back the curtain on how "business as usual" really works for career politicians like Senator Mike McGuire. Here is the plain truth: While all of us are pinching pennies to keep up with the rising cost of groceries, rent, and healthcare, McGuire has been using a legal loophole to fund a "VIP lifestyle" on the dime of special interests.

The "Pay-to-Play" Playbook

The investigation found that McGuire runs a "ballot measure committee,” an account supposedly meant for helping pass new laws. But instead of spending that money on actual campaigns, he’s been using it as a private slush fund to:

  • Spend $40,000 to attend the Super Bowl in Las Vegas.
  • Rub elbows with lobbyists from the very same corporations we are fighting to hold accountable. (A few that stand out: Big Pharma, Comcast, Davita Healthcare, Target, Verizon)
  • Accept thousands in "gifts" from corporate sponsors while those same companies lobby him for favors in government.

This isn’t just "politics,” it’s a system designed to give big donors a VIP lane while regular families get stuck in the back of the line.

The scariest part is that this is a perfectly legal political game, which means people like Senator McGuire have to make the ethical choice of not engaging in this tit-for-tat, self-serving political strategy. Like too many politicians, he has chosen wrong.

Audrey is Different

This is exactly why Audrey Denney is in this race. She isn’t a career politician who spent the last decade learning how to work the system in Sacramento. She’s a working-class educator and nonprofit leader who grew up right here in Northern California and has dedicated her life and career to serving our communities during our most difficult moments and helping to solve our biggest challenges – from food access, to wildfire prevention, to education, to rural neglect.

Audrey believes that faith in our government won't return until we shut the door on "pay-to-play" politics for good. That’s why she has made a clear promise:

"I have never taken and will never take a dime of corporate PAC money, because regular people shouldn’t have to wonder whether their voice matters more than the special interests buying influence in our political system."

But this raises the alarm about needing small-dollar donations even more. If this is the kind of playbook we’re up against, we’re going to need everyone, and I need EVERYONE who can to step up, dig deep, and help support our 100% grassroots-funded campaign.

If you've saved payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:

McGuire has $850,000 in his "Progress for California" account funded by corporations and special interests. Audrey has you.

We are building a grassroots campaign that answers to people, not lobbyists.

We’re fighting for the real issues that face our communities. Shocking as it may be, Audrey is running to make the lives of our neighbors better, not enrich herself or wealthy donors, and not cozy up to special interests and political insiders for personal gain. When the party that’s supposed to be fighting for the “working class” still participates in this kind of behavior, it’s no wonder people are giving up on politics as usual. And it’s no wonder Washington continues to fail us.

But there’s a different way. We can change that right here at home. If you’re tired of seeing politicians live large while families in our district struggle to get by, please chip in whatever you can today.

It’s time we had a representative who works for us, not for the highest bidder. It’s time for representation that doesn’t just say the right things, but does the right thing.

Best,

Alex Brown
