Dear MoveOn member,
This is how brutal regimes are defeated: In the days since ICE executed Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old wife and mother of three, in the streets of Minneapolis, there's been a surge of public outrage, courage, solidarity, and protest all across the country.
All told, there have been more than 1,200 peaceful, nonviolent protests in communities large and small.
Corporations are starting to end their complicity with ICE: After months of grassroots pressure by MoveOn and others, Spotify announced it's no longer running ICE recruitment ads, and Avelo Airlines said it will stop flying deportation charters for ICE.1,2 Finally.
This could be a turning point, John, as Good's murder helps more people see the inhumanity of ICE. But whether it is or not is up to us.
That's why MoveOn and a coalition of organizations are holding a rally and vigil outside of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection headquarters this evening to keep building momentum to stop ICE’s violence and brutality.
MoveOn and our coalition moved at lightning speed late last week and over the weekend to provide the mobilization infrastructure to enable so many people across the country to participate in ICE Out for Good protests this past weekend. It was a herculean effort.
And we won't stop there. Government funding runs out on January 30, and Democrats will once again have leverage—if they use it. We're calling on Democrats to refuse to fund Trump’s brutal ICE force.
But we need your help to have the resources to keep working at breakneck speed to rein in Trump and ICE and protect our communities, lives, and freedom. Will you rush a $9 donation now? (If you have saved your payment information with ActBlue, your donation will go straight through.)
If you're looking for a through line for the escalation in violence at home and abroad in the last 10 days, Robert Reich put it this way:
"Trump has unleashed violence on America’s streets for much the same reason he has unleashed violence on Latin America and is planning to unleash it elsewhere: to display his own strength. His motive is to gain more power and, along the way, more wealth. (On Sunday, he even posted an image referring to himself as the “Acting President of Venezuela.”) … We must stop trying to make rational sense out of what Trump is doing. He is a ruthless dictator, plain and simple."3
Now is our best opportunity to rein in Trump and ICE—before the violence and cruelty get even worse. ICE reportedly plans to invest $100 million in what it calls the “wartime recruitment” of 10,000 new agents, in addition to the 20,000 already employed, with recruitment targeting gun and military enthusiasts and people who listen to right-wing radio, among others.4
Help us make the vigil and rally tonight outside the U.S. Customs and Border Protection headquarters as powerful as possible and then keep building pressure on Democrats to use the government funding showdown at the end of the month to rein in ICE, save lives, and stop the violence. Rush a $9 donation now. (If you have saved your payment information with ActBlue, your donation will go straight through.)
Thanks for all you do.
