Gebeyanesh had her first period at 14 — a moment that should have been a quiet rite of passage in her Ethiopian village, marked by her mother’s care and a family celebration. Instead, it drew dangerous attention, as many in her community saw menstruation as a sign a girl was ready for marriage and motherhood.

When conflict forced her family to flee, everything was lost, including sanitary supplies. She fashioned makeshift pads from strips of clothing, risking infection, and along with other displaced women and girls hid in forests to wait out their periods, exposed to extreme weather and increased threats of sexual violence. Then Gebeyanesh received a UNFPA Dignity Kit, designed to help her manage her period and avoid these risks.

“The pads are easy to maintain and we were provided with soap to wash them with,” Gebeyanesh shared.

UNFPA Dignity Kits are filled with essential period supplies and minimize risks to women and girls who need them. With a gift today, you can provide hope and dignity to women and girls in crisis — it will let them know that someone like you cares for them when everyone else has turned away. [[link removed]?]

Gebeyanesh and a friend go through the items of a UNFPA Dignity Kit, containing essentials such as disposable and reusable sanitary pads, underwear, soap, toothbrush, and detergent.

In regions we serve, including Ethiopia, Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine, women and girls have to manage their monthly periods without the hygiene products they need. And for many, menstruation often comes with shame and stigma, missing school or work, anxiety and stress, illness, and sexual violence.

“I only have one pair of underwear, and I have to wash them with dirty water and then use them again,” Aisha , from Gaza, told UNFPA.

UNFPA Dignity Kits are distributed to displaced women and girls in Rafah, Gaza.

Each kit contains the same basic yet essential items: disposable and reusable menstrual pads, bath soap, bath towel, multiple pairs of underwear, detergent powder, toothpaste, a toothbrush and a comb. From there, kits are customized to suit the needs of the women and girls receiving them — headscarves for women in regions where they are common or blankets for those in colder climates.

A Dignity Kit might be the only humanitarian aid women and girls receive, but they restore dignity and hope for a better future . “I dropped out of school the first time I saw my period,” recalled Samrawit , who was displaced by conflict in Ethiopia when she was 12. “As I didn’t have sanitary pads, I didn’t feel confident going out. I didn’t want to feel embarrassed.”

For women and girls like Gebeyanesh, Aisha, and Samrawit, UNFPA Dignity Kits are life changing. Each kit costs only $15 to create and your gift today can reach women and girls facing unimaginable hardship. Please deliver the gift of comfort and dignity to women and girls in crisis regions around the world. [[link removed]?]
