Dear John,
We are horrified by the images and reports emerging from Iran. We are waiting for verified numbers but the death toll is already staggering.
We fear the situation is about to get even worse if Trump decides to intervene militarily. Many interests in Washington who supported failed U.S. interventions to bring human rights and democracy to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya are now aggressively lobbying for Trump to attack Iran – and his decision may be imminent.
The future of Iran must be shaped by Iranians, not by repression, foreign militarism, or those seeking to exploit suffering to justify war. Iran’s long history is riddled with examples of external interventions and military actions that have only robbed Iranians of their agency to decide their future.
At this time when our hearts ache for Iranians who have been killed and wounded, we must raise our voices to demand accountability while also ensuring our government does not exploit the situation.
Please contact your elected officials [[link removed]] now to call on them to stand up against U.S. military intervention in Iran and stand up for steps that can truly help the Iranian people.
We are calling on lawmakers to:
* Assert their constitutional authority and urgently vote on a War Powers Resolution making it clear that Congress has not granted the President the authority to use military force on Iran.
* Support the authorization of remittances (small financial transfers Iranian Americans could send) to help families afford food, rent, medicine, bail, and more. Sanctions currently block remittance payments.
* Urge the administration to support tools for internet access for Iranians to communicate despite efforts to throttle and shutdown the internet amid protest.
* Work to ease broad economic sanctions which have imposed severe hardship on ordinary Iranians for decades.
