Dear John,
I want to share some updates with you from Congress and across our nation. Here are five things you need to know:
1. Before anything else, I want to take a moment to mourn the loss of Congressman John Lewis. He was a trailblazer for civil rights, a principled leader in Congress and in Georgia, and a kind and humble man. I am blessed to have known him for fifty years as a colleague and a friend. May we carry John’s spirit with us as we build a better future.
2. My colleagues and I are working on a new relief package to address the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. This will include extended unemployment and paycheck protection programs, education funding as the school year approaches, and support for state and local governments. I will keep you informed about the bill’s progress and what it may mean for you.
3. I am proud to announce that the Great American Outdoors Act passed the House this week and is now on its way to the President for signature. This bipartisan bill supports our nation’s land and water conservation efforts and will deliver vital investments to our National Parks. This legislation will not only protect our public lands, but will propel job creation and help support our long-term tourism economy.
4. The National Defense Authorization Act passed in the House of Representatives. This bill builds on the structure of last week’s Defense appropriation and sets our national security priorities for the year. The NDAA includes state-of-the art vehicles and equipment, nuclear sanctions for North Korea, and improved pay and benefits for service members.
5. The House will consider a minibus package of four appropriations bills, including two that I helped write: the Agriculture, Rural Development, and FDA Appropriation, and the Military and Veterans Affairs Appropriation. I specifically included provisions for rural broadband, COVID-19 medication research, and health care for veterans and military families.
