John,
Thanks to your activism, Senate Republicans appear to have abandoned Donald Trump’s demands for a payroll tax cut to be included in the next coronavirus financial aid package now being developed in Congress. They got your message: this is a terribly ineffective way to help families in need and it would jeopardize Social Security’s finances.
But that doesn’t mean their attacks on Social Security―and Medicare too―are over.
We’ve learned that Mitch McConnell is poised to replace the payroll tax cut with a devious scheme to cut Social Security and Medicare behind closed doors, with little accountability.
The GOP is rumored to be adding Senator Mitt Romney’s TRUST Act to the final COVID-19 package of 2020. This bill would create a fast-track, closed-door process that is likely to result in deep cuts to Social Security and Medicare.[1]
It’s outrageous that Senate Republicans would use a pandemic-caused emergency to attack our beloved Social Security and Medicare programs that provide critical services to the elderly, people with disabilities, children and families.
Mitch McConnell plans to release his COVID-19 relief plan early next week. Donate today to fight back against a pandemic plan that threatens our earned benefits while providing even more handouts to the rich and corporations.
We should be strengthening, not cutting, Social Security and Medicare by making the wealthy and corporations pay their fair share of taxes.
And we demand a coronavirus aid plan that extends $600 weekly enhanced unemployment insurance benefits, protects people and families from evictions and hunger in the midst of the pandemic and provides our states and communities with desperately needed funds to provide critical services while keeping millions of people employed.
Together, we have united our voices against the GOP attacks on our earned benefits before and won. We must do so again now.
Pitch in today to fight back and demand a pandemic response that defends Social Security and Medicare from fast-track cuts and that invests in communities and families―not gives more handouts to corporations and the wealthy.
