Newsletter of the Goethe-Institut Washington

Dear Friends,

As we approach the "dog days of summer," with many of our team members stepping away from their workspaces, we would like to inform you that this newsletter contains the last language department updates we will send out before our summer vacation (or staycation) begins. We will send out another cultural programming update on August 6, and the full newsletter as normal will resume again on August 27.

On the subject of staycations – if your August travel plans have been grounded this year, consider learning German while at home! As we get closer to the new school year, check out our German language acquisition programs for young people and educators in the United States.

If you missed our Queer As German Folk exhibition from Summer 2019 at our old K Street space, or saw it and wish you could check it out again – you're in luck! The project has now been converted into a compact digital experience, going live on August 7.

Our Sustainable Future

Meet our team from Deerfield Elementary School in South Carolina!
In their project “Junge Grüne Träume (Young Green Dreams),” this fourth-grade class aimed to engage everyone at their school in sustainability. Each class contributed to a project, from making a butterfly garden to creating recycled art pieces. Their goal is to inspire others to become involved in sustainability efforts in their community. They want to show that a person’s impact on the environment is not limited by their age; even young members of the community can be inspirational leaders.

FEHLER: German is wie Pudding

Get a German girlfriend, they said. You’ll speak the language in no time, they said. Adam Fletcher, an English man in Berlin, tried, but he only found one who spoke perfect English. Big mistake! Read all about Adam’s journey to learn German in Berlin.

Queer as German Folk

Digital Exhibit

"Queer as German Folk" Goes Digital

Queer As German Folk – last year's exhibition developed for the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots – has now been converted into a compact digital experience. This new format allows visitors to experience queer movements past and present from anywhere in the world. Audiovisual, animated, and interactive forms of presentation provide visitors with an exciting, structureless experience that is simple to navigate and accessible across a range of devices in both English and German. The digital exhibition will be live starting August 2 2020.

Queer As German Folk's digital launch will be accompanied by a full program of virtual events organized by various Goethe-Institut locations in the United States, featuring additional work and perspectives from LGBTIQ+ artists. The program will kick off on August 7, 2020, with a digital film series coordinated by various regional partners that will be available for online streaming. These screenings will be accompanied by Q&As with the films’ directors and conversations with the audience.

Experimental Sound

Custom Culture: "Go Your Gait – Path of Awareness"

For sound artist Katrin Emler, aka Katrinem, urban spaces are best explored on foot with open ears, through the lens of her gait’s rhythm. Annette Klein, co-curator in the cultural programming department at Goethe-Institut Boston, looks at this approach to investigating sound and space.

Healing and Transformative Justice: Imagining Black Feminist and Abolitionist Futures

Apotheke was originally conceived as a project to create a physical third place at the Goethe-Institut New York – a decommodified space that is neither work nor home, which nurtures community life, socialization, and creative interaction. With the global spread of COVID-19, we find ourselves isolated in our homes and asking the question: how can we carve out a third space when all of our spaces have suddenly collapsed into one?

On July 29, join Cara Page, Mariame Kaba, and Adaku Utah for "Healing and Transformative Justice," a co-moderated conversation that imagines a Black feminist future free from state violence, policing, and exploitation.

Archives and Legacies in the Performing Arts

How are the works of performing artists handled after their death? Should their legacies be curated, licensed, or archived – and if so, how? Join Bettina Wagner-Bergelt, artistic director of the Tanztheater Wuppertal, and Trevor C. Carlson, a long-time collaborator of Merce Cunningham and former Executive Director of the Merce Cunningham Dance Foundation and Trustee of the Merce Cunningham Trust, as they share their experience working with artists' archives and legacies, on Sunday, August 2.
