Plans to mandate outpatient treatment for some mental health patients in Allegheny County drew criticism from clinicians and advocates who said it could needlessly put vulnerable residents in the hands of law enforcement. With the Assisted Outpatient Treatment program underway ([link removed]) , local leaders say they have established safeguards against the harms sometimes reported in other states where it’s practised.
Erin Dalton, DHS director, promised transparency as the program unfolds ([link removed]) , urging: “We’ve concluded that the risks of doing nothing are higher than the risk of trying this.”
