Dear John,
On this date two years ago, I ran into a washed out road with my 5-year old son in the backseat. When I jumped out of the car to take some video footage, like a good “newsy," he asked “Why is the water over the road?” I told him “Well, there was a big storm, and the road couldn’t handle it.” What I told him was true, but I left out the reality of climate change. That’s not his burden to carry, not yet at least. It’s the “grown ups” who need to fix this.
Today marks the two-year anniversary of the last in a series of devastating storms that hit Maine in December 2023 and January 2024. I was still forecasting the weather at the time, and I remember the storms vividly. What really struck me was how DIRECTLY the damage from the storms could be tied to climate change. I break down the science of that connection in this video from MCV. Give it a watch to better understand how climate change fueled these storms. |
