Last night, Donald Trump triggered a massive constitutional crisis that threatens to destroy our economy and lead to untold suffering and pain for working-class Americans. 

First, a report leaked that Trump’s Department of Justice was opening an investigation against Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell over “lies to Congress about the scope” of a renovation of the Fed headquarters in D.C.

Powell then released a video on social media acknowledging the investigation and warned that Trump was weaponizing the DOJ against him in order take full control of the central bank:

This a full blown coup.

The Fed has been independent for 100 years, which is essential so that it can make decisions based on what is best for the economy, not for political reasons.

The Fed acts like a thermostat for the economy, raising and lowering interest rates to prevent prices from getting too high or the economy from crashing.

For months, Trump has been attacking Powell, begging him to lower interest rates significantly. Powell has resisted in fear of triggering skyrocketing prices and crashing the economy.

Now, Trump is weaponizing the DOJ in an attempt to seize control of the Fed and set monetary policy himself at a time when the economy is already precarious due to his mismanagement. 

This criminal act could unleash hell for working-class Americans. If Trump takes control of the central bank and begins lowering interest rates despite warnings from experts, it could trigger a massive rise in prices and send our economy crashing at a time when many people are already struggling to afford the essentials.

Republicans have been attacking the Federal Reserve for decades in an attempt to cede control of our economy over to billionaires and corporations. My opponent Lauren Boebert, has even cosponsored a bill that would abolish it altogether.

This is what happens when MAGA extremists led by a convicted felon take over our government; lawlessness, a cratering economy, and working-people taking the brunt of their abuse.
