Is Donald Trump a liar?
Is the Pope Catholic?*
But, sometimes, Trump actually tells the truth. In fact, he has been quite open
over the years about how he approaches getting what he wants.
* From his vile attitude toward women, one infamous example of which is the Access Hollywood tape (recorded in 2005 but not made public until 2016).
* To what limits he thinks there are on his power, as he told The New York Times last week: “My own morality. … It’s the only thing that can stop me. I don’t
need international law.”
* Donald Trump thinks that if he wants something, he is entitled to take it.
And that if he gets away with taking something, he was right to do so.
* If that’s not enough to tell you how the Trump regime operates, here’s what
Stephen Miller, Trump’s ghoulish deputy chief of staff, told CNN (also last
week): “You can talk all you want about international niceties and everything
else. But we live in a world … that is governed by strength, that is governed
by force, that is governed by power.”
Following the regime’s flagrantly illegal attack on Venezuela just a few days
into the New Year — which was preceded by a U.S. military strike in Nigeria on
Christmas Day — Trump and MAGA henchmen like Miller have been making noise about
using military force against other nations and territories, including Colombia,
Cuba, Greenland, and Mexico.
Donald Trump and Stephen Miller are trying to resurrect the kind of global rule
by brute force that sacrifices human rights, undermines democracy, forecloses
international cooperation, and even threatens humanity’s survival.
We simply must not permit the foreign policy of the United States to be “Trump
takes what he wants because he has the most guns.”
To this point in Trump’s second term, Congress has been woefully deficient as an
(allegedly) coequal branch of the federal government that is supposed to serve a
critical “checks and balances” role in preventing the executive branch from
abusing its power.

The Trump regime’s apparent intent to resurrect a kind of imperialism by brute
force is illegal, immoral, stupid, wasteful, and unpopular. Congress must do
everything in its power to prevent Trump from going any farther down this path.
The American people — all of the world’s people — are counting on you to stop
this nightmare. [[link removed]]

*Normally, we might not use this common expression, but it seems apt here given
that the actual Pope — Pope Leo XIV — just condemned Trump’s imperialism, noting
that “a zeal for war is spreading.”
