I hope this note finds you and your family staying healthy.
I truly mean that, because right now, a lot of people aren’t.
Everywhere I go in Michigan, I’m hearing the same thing: classrooms a quarter-empty, workplaces short-staffed, parents juggling sick kids, and seniors unsure if it’s safe to go out at all.
And the data backs it up: This is one of the worst flu seasons we’ve seen in decades. Emergency rooms are packed. Doctor visits for respiratory illness are at record highs. From the flu to COVID to RSV – even colds that knock you out for a week – it’s all hitting at once.
This is when a strong, steady public health system matters most. Instead, we’re feeling the consequences of one that’s been weakened beyond recognition.
Here’s the thing: Public health doesn’t make headlines when it’s working. No one reports on the outbreaks that didn’t happen, the kids who didn’t get sick, or the paycheck you didn’t miss.
The Detroit News usually doesn’t run headlines that say, “Everything Is Fine!”
But when our leadership fails us, ignores science, and replaces it with conspiracies, the consequences are real. Kids miss school. Parents miss work. Seniors land in the ER.
And for so many families, getting sick is more than just inconvenient: It’s financially devastating. If you’re a small business owner, one bad flu can derail everything. Or if you don’t have paid sick leave, a few days in bed can mean a missed paycheck and rent you can’t cover.
The bottom line is this: America thrives when Americans are healthy.
That’s what makes recent actions from the Department of Health and Human Services so dangerous.
Under Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., we’ve seen dramatic shifts that undermine proven medical science at exactly the wrong time. Longstanding childhood vaccine recommendations were suddenly changed, career experts were pushed out, and confusion has rushed in to fill the void.
This isn’t some abstract policy debate in Washington. It’s about whether parents can trust the guidance they get when their child’s fever spikes. It’s about whether local doctors have what they need to protect patients during a severe flu season.
I’ve spoken to doctors – Democrats and Republicans – who are alarmed. They’re seeing confusion take root. And they know that when trust in public health breaks down, people suffer.
That’s not acceptable.
That’s why I introduced articles of impeachment against Secretary Kennedy.
Impeachment is a serious step, and I spent months diligently working with scientists, doctors, and congressional experts to get my articles of impeachment right. It’s not something you do for political points. But when the person entrusted with protecting public health undermines science, spreads misinformation, and puts lives at risk – there has to be accountability.
Public health is not a partisan experiment. It should be based on evidence, led by serious people, and focused on one mission: keeping Americans healthy.
Michiganders get this. We show up for each other. We don’t ask if someone is a Democrat or a Republican before bringing them soup or shoveling their sidewalk. We lend a helping hand because it’s the right thing to do.
That’s the spirit I carry with me in this work.
So if your household’s been hit with illness this season, if you’re worried about someone you love – I see you. I hear you. And I’ll keep fighting to make sure our public health system is strong, trustworthy, and focused on protecting you.
Take care of yourself. And thank you for believing in science, compassion, and a government that actually helps its people.
With grit and gratitude,
Haley
A personal note from Haley 👋
I’m a lifelong Michigander and the daughter of small-business owners. I’ve spent my career fighting for Michigan’s working families – and now I’m running for the U.S. Senate to keep standing up for the people I love.
But here’s the truth: Senate control could come down to Michigan. And Trump and his megadonors know it. That’s why they’re gearing up to spend tens of millions to defeat me and hand this seat to a MAGA Republican.
I need your help to fight back. This race will be one of the most competitive – and expensive – in the country, and I’m counting on grassroots support to win.
If you’re with me, will you chip in today?
Paid for by Haley Stevens for Senate.
