Friend,
The past few days have seen a dramatic surge in protests in Iran, which are now the most significant the country has experienced in nearly 20 years. The regime’s brutal and desperate response has left over 500 dead, suggesting it is feeling increasingly vulnerable, both at home and abroad.
This Tuesday at 12pm Eastern / 9am Pacific, the J Street Policy Center is hosting a briefing on the rapidly evolving situation. Register here to join us >>
What is driving the protests? How seriously is the regime threatened? How can we know what’s going on with an internet blackout? And what should we make of Trump’s threats to intervene with military strikes?
We’ll be joined by two leading Iran experts closely tracking developments on the ground:
- Nate Swanson is the director of the Iran Strategy Project at the Atlantic Council’s Scowcroft Middle East Security Initiative. He has served as a senior advisor on Iran policy across multiple administrations, most recently serving as director for Iran at the National Security Council.
- Negar Mortazavi is a senior fellow at the Center for International Policy and editor and host of The Iran Podcast. An award-winning journalist and commentator, Negar grew up in Iran and Germany and has covered Iranian affairs from exile for over a decade.
I hope you can join us for this urgent conversation.
