A HUGE THANKS to everyone who has donated and taken action in support our work to defend the Amazon and indigenous rights! We are overwhelmed with gratitude by the intensity of support from around the world!
This past week, news of the devastating fires in the Amazon – more than 74,000 in Brazil alone, an 84% increase over last year's count – has garnered global attention.
The response from people around the world in the wake of these terrible disasters has been inspiring and heartening. Brazil's right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro has felt the pressure and even had to walk back some of his vicious rhetoric and attacks on the Amazon as a result.
Yet our indigenous allies continue to face daily threats to their homes, and now is the time to make sure that we keep up the pressure in support of their resistance. That's why it is critical that we grow the movement by mobilizing as many Amazon Sustainers as we can.
Amazon Watch is working around the clock to respond, expand our advocacy work in support of our indigenous allies, and redirect funds to provide direct support for indigenous communities fighting to defend their rights and territories. The incredible outpouring of support has been vital to our efforts to significantly expand our work in Brazil and direct regranting to partners via our Amazon Protectors Fund.
The time is NOW for the Amazon. The world is finally waking up – let's make sure this becomes the moment everything changed and we solidified the movement to guarantee the rights of Indigneous peoples and permanently protect the Amazon rainforest from destruction.
Becoming a monthly supporter is the best way to keep this fight strong and help us to permanently expand our work and our effectiveness.
Thank you!
