Iowa legislators should work for We the People.

Friend –

The Iowa legislative session starts today. Once again, it will be a challenging environment, to be sure, but our seasoned policy director, Pete McRoberts, is up to the task. Becca Eastwood, deputy policy director, will also be at the statehouse and coordinating volunteer and outreach efforts, assisted by Erica Dubin-Barz, community engagement manager.

We expect to see plenty of bills that will negatively impact some key civil liberties, including reproductive freedom; LGTBQ rights and especially transgender rights; book banning and the freedom to read in school and public libraries; separation of church and state; racial justice issues and attacks on DEI; free speech with a focus on student and academic freedom; immigrant rights; and more.

But we won't just be working to block legislation that harms civil liberties. We'll also be encouraging legislation that actually promotes civil liberties, especially protection from mass government surveillance. We will be talking to legislators about better laws to regulate automated license plate readers (ALPRs), which scan hundreds of thousands of license plates in Iowa and feed them into a national database that can be used to wrongly track and harass everyday, law-abiding people. If you share these concerns, we encourage you to get involved. Join our volunteer advocacy team, the ACLU of Iowa Capitol Corps, and stay informed on the latest legislation, find opportunities to reach out to your legislators, and work in your community to do public education and organizing. And as always, thank you for your support. It's critical that like-minded Iowans work together to make sure that our state motto, "Our Liberties We Prize and Our Rights We Will Maintain," holds true for decades to come.

With appreciation,
