What is the Senate Waiting For?
=========================
As of this week, it has been six months since the first known case of the coronavirus in the United States. In those six months, millions of people have endured the death of friends and loved ones, unemployment, missed rent payments, difficult financial choices, reduced access to public programs that they relied upon to survive, and more. Even with the assistance that was provided in the previous rounds of stimulus packages, too many Americans are struggling to survive both physically and financially.
But on Monday, July 27, many of those means of assistance are set to expire. If the U.S. Senate does not immediately come to an agreement to extend stays on evictions, the additional $600 unemployment benefits, enhanced Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, and student loan forgiveness, the devastation for millions of people-and the economy at large-will be exacerbated tenfold.
Congress must focus on extending assistance for the millions in dire need, not corporate tax breaks <[link removed]>.

The Immeasurable Loss of Rep. John Lewis
Last Friday, July 17, the world lost a true American treasure. Rep. John Lewis' (D-GA) life was dedicated to leading a nation-and the world-toward justice for all. An original Freedom Rider and a chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, he was foundational to the civil rights movement, putting his body and his life on the line as he crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama to advance equal rights for Black Americans.
His work did not stop there. In his 17 terms as a U.S. representative, Lewis fought for equal rights and justice for the many minority communities that have yet to truly be afforded "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." His leadership widened a path of opportunity for millions of Americans, and his courage challenged-and changed-our country and the world.
The loss of John Lewis is immeasurable to the United States and the world. We grieve alongside his family and friends. It is now on us to continue his fight.
