Dear Friend,

As we begin this new year, our hearts remain heavy with sadness and anger over the tragic killing of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, mother of three, poet, and beloved Minneapolis community member. This heartbreaking loss was felt across the country. I offer my deepest condolences to her family, her children, her wife, and all who knew her kindness. We mourn deeply and demand accountability.

I am proud to join my colleague Rep. Robin Kelly in introducing articles of impeachment against Secretary Kristi Noem. Enough is enough. We can no longer tolerate leadership that has turned ICE into a reckless force, marked by constitutional violations and actions that endanger lives. Secretary Noem must be held accountable for the leadership that contributed to this tragedy and many others under her watch.

The same day as Renee’s shooting, I sat in an Oversight Committee hearing where House Republicans again attacked Minneapolis—pushing to gut childcare programs working families depend on, while demonizing immigrants and shielding the Trump Administration. In a time of political and economic upheaval—including President Trump’s unlawful, unilateral military actions in Venezuela that sidelined Congress—House Republicans instead focused on redefining showerheads to please the President. Our first order of business should have been asserting congressional authority and tackling urgent domestic needs, not undermining checks and balances.

Now, the Senate has taken a bold step by advancing a bipartisan war powers resolution to bar further military action against Venezuela without congressional approval. We must do the same in the House to hold the President accountable and restore the proper balance of power. The Constitution is clear—Congress, not one person, decides when we go to war.

Amid this heartbreak, I find hope in the House’s bipartisan vote—forced by Democrats—to extend enhanced ACA premium tax credits for three years, helping prevent skyrocketing healthcare costs for millions, including many in New Mexico. Healthcare is a human right. Now Senate Republicans and President Trump must decide: stand with working families or make life harder. I’m also proud to reintroduce this week the Public Health Nursing Act with Senator Ed Markey, which would strengthen the public health nursing workforce nationwide and authorize $5 billion annually for the next 10 years—an important step toward addressing healthcare shortages in New Mexico.

Despite the challenges, I remain hopeful. We draw strength from our communities, from one another, and from the fight for justice, accountability, and affordable care. Together, we will honor Renee’s life by pushing for real change. Thank you for your support—my office is always here for you.
