Dear Friend,
This week, U.S. citizen Renée Nicole Good was murdered by an ICE agent, as clearly recorded in video footage. Her tragic killing, along with the New Year’s Eve killing of Keith Porter by an off-duty ICE agent, the multiple shootings in Portland Oregon, and the kidnappings of U.S. citizens and immigrants by ICE have rightfully sparked protests across the country.
We are in solidarity with Minnesotans and neighbors nationwide in calling to remove ICE from our communities and abolish ICE altogether. The agents responsible for these acts of violence must be held accountable. Congress must also stop funding ICE, whose presence threatens the safety and lives of everyone across the U.S.
As people take to the streets to speak out against the presence of ICE in their communities, we unequivocally affirm the right of people to assemble, express dissent and demand accountability following Good’s murder and ICE’s occupation. We must protect those who are keeping our democracy alive by exercising their First Amendment rights. Demonstrators have a right to speak out without fear of harm or retaliation.
We are witnessing a coordinated, escalating effort across the United States to suppress protest and dissent through legislation, policy, and enforcement. We can’t sit still and allow this administration to attack and question the legitimacy of protests. The right to protest remains a pivotal part of our democracy and a cornerstone of our movements for racial justice and immigrant rights.
In solidarity,
Carmen Daugherty
Interim Executive Director
