Last night, USDA Secretary Brook Rollins announced that the agency would suspend federal financial awards to Minnesota, effective immediately.
Nearly 8% of Minnesota’s population relies on SNAP support to buy groceries. This move takes food out of the mouths of over 450,000 Minnesota residents, per month.
Cutting off vital funding for life-saving programs is no way to protect the American people from hunger or defend federally funded programs from fraud.
Joel Berg, CEO of Hunger Free America, responded: "This USDA action is both immoral and illegal. It would never be acceptable for the federal government to strip food and nutrition aid from hundreds of thousands of children, low-paid workers, veterans, people with disabilities, seniors, and members of active-duty military households in any state who are legally eligible for such assistance. But to do so solely because you disagree with a state politically is a barbaric act of authoritarianism."
Threats to SNAP are threats to American families. We’re going to keep fighting, and we hope that you’ll join the movement to end hunger in America.
