ADL Mourns the Loss of Civil Rights Icon and American Hero Rep. John Lewis
ADL mourns the loss of U.S. Rep. John Lewis, D-GA, an iconic leader who played a pivotal role in the events of the Civil Rights Era, from the Freedom Rides to Bloody Sunday to the March on Washington, where he delivered one of the keynote addresses as the youngest speaker to take the stage at the age of 23. Congressman Lewis repeatedly and bravely risked his life to promote the philosophy of political nonviolence to achieve the dream of equality.
Congressman Lewis was a close friend of ADL and a lifelong supporter of ADL’s mission to secure justice and fair treatment to all. In 2013, ADL Washington, D.C. had the privilege of honoring Lewis at our Concert Against Hate
at the Kennedy Center for a lifetime of public service and his courage in advancing the ideals of the civil rights movement in America.
"Lewis will be rightfully remembered both for his contributions to the civil rights movement and for his leadership as the 'conscience of Congress,'" said ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt in an op-ed in Newsweek this week.
"And he also will be remembered in the Jewish community for his partnership and his passion for fighting antisemitism and all forms of hate, and for tirelessly working to bridge divides.”

Civil Rights Groups Express Disappointment with Facebook Meeting
Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s two top executives, met with civil rights groups earlier this month in an attempt to mollify them over how the social network treats hate speech on its site. As stated in a New York Times
article “Mr. Zuckerberg, Facebook’s chief executive, and Ms. Sandberg, the chief operating officer, failed to win its critics over. For more than an hour over Zoom, the duo, along with other Facebook executives, discussed the company’s handling of hate speech with representatives from the ADL, the NAACP, Color of Change and other groups. Those organizations have recently helped push hundreds of companies, such as Unilever and Best Buy, to pause their advertising on Facebook to protest its handling of toxic speech and misinformation.”
In response, ADL and our partners released a video yesterday called "Dear Mark."

Farrakhan Remains Most Popular Antisemite in America
Antisemitism has stained the speeches and statements of Nation of Islam (NOI) leader Louis Farrakhan for decades. This past July 4th was no different, as Farrakhan delivered an address replete with antisemitic lies and stereotypes, and called for his listeners to speak out against Jews.
His speech reverberated in the ensuing days among celebrities and garnered over a million views on social media. Louis Farrakhan may be the most popular antisemite in America, as his messages that espouse hate and division have been given a pass in mainstream society.

Boogaloo, Rebranded
What do extremists do when a major social media site starts to deplatform them? While some migrate to less restrictive platforms, others adopt camouflage techniques so they can continue to operate on their platform of choice, hiding in plain sight through name changes and coded phrases. The anti-government extremist "boogaloo" movement took the latter approach when, on June 30, Facebook announced it had banned hundreds of groups and pages associated with the boogaloo concept. The move eliminated major hubs of the nascent movement.
While many boogalooers retreated to other social media platforms, some took an alternative path: rebranding their movement on Facebook using the names of prominent media companies.
