John,
Our Social Security system was built by generations of Americans over nearly a century. Each of us makes it stronger with every paycheck, and it has been a wild success.
Before Social Security was enacted, half of seniors lived in poverty. Today, fewer than 10% do.
That is the truth that Donald Trump wants to bulldoze―literally―by selling the Wilbur J. Cohen Building, and all of the New Deal art on its walls, to a developer who will raze it like it’s the East Wing of the White House.
We’re building a campaign to stop this demolition and prevent Trump’s Orwellian attack on Social Security! Can you rush a donation today?

-- MICHAEL'S EMAIL --
John,
It’s a chaotic time. Donald Trump is seizing unprecedented powers to wage war, to murder civilian protestors, and to further entrench American oligarchy.
In times like these, it’s hard to get people to focus on historic murals. But this is bigger than art―Donald Trump’s proposed destruction of the Wilbur J. Cohen Building, called the ‘Sistine Chapel of American Art,’ is part of an Orwellian plot to erase Social Security’s history en route to dismantling the program.
Social Security Works went to the Cohen building and were denied entry. So we made a video outside―and it’s getting attention. Watch the video, then chip in to stop the demolition of Social Security’s history!
Here’s what’s happening: After reducing the East Wing of the White House to rubble and etching his own name onto the Kennedy Center, Trump has his sights set down the street, on the Wilbur J. Cohen Federal Building, which was constructed to be the original headquarters of the Social Security Administration. In that spirit, the building was designed to incorporate publicly owned art that inspired civic pride and common purpose in the public servants who reported for duty in the building.
Trump’s proposed demolition is about more than a building―it erases the true history of our Social Security system. It is consistent with the patchwork of lies that Donald Trump and his allies have spread about Social Security throughout his 2nd term, part of a renewed push toward privatizing the last pillar of economic stability that many Americans can count on.
Social Security was created for a purpose. Before Social Security was enacted, half of seniors lived in poverty. Today, fewer than 10% do. That’s why the New Deal was greeted with such exultation.
For decades, Republican politicians have sought to dismantle the Social Security system that was built by the New Deal and expanded by successive administrations of both parties. Every time, they have failed because the American people know the meaning of Social Security, and the value it holds in their lives.
Our campaign helped keep the bulldozers at bay over the holiday. But this fight isn’t over. The Trump administration still wants to move fast to destroy our connection to Social Security’s creation. Can you rush a donation to stop Trump’s bulldozers?
In solidarity,
Michael Phelan

P.S. We've also set up a website for this campaign, where you can learn more about why this building is such a critical part of Social Security's history. Check it out at StopTheDemolition.org.
