A week ago today, we lost civil rights icon Congressman John Lewis. In 1965, Congressman Lewis led the historical march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, in a united protest for voting rights.

State troopers stopped Congressman Lewis and the protestors on their way to the capitol. Footage of the state troopers violently attacking peaceful protestors helped lead to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA).

The VRA was a huge victory for our communities — a victory that Congressman Lewis played an enormous role in securing. But in 2013, the Supreme Court gutted the VRA of 1965. In response to this injustice, Congressman Lewis helped the House pass the Voting Rights Advancement Act (VRAA) in 2019 to fully restore the VRA, while further expanding voting rights.

With an election just over 100 days away, we need to ensure every American can make their voice heard. Today, please join The Collective in continuing Congressman Lewis's fight for equity and justice by demanding the Senate vote on the VRAA now.

During his lifetime, Congressman Lewis was on the front lines of the civil rights movement — he was an original Freedom Rider, a speaker at the March on Washington, and he was later known as the "conscience" of the Congress because of his moral integrity.

Congressman Lewis was larger than life. He showed us what representation can accomplish for our communities. We will never forget what he did for our democracy, and it's on all of us to continue this important work.
