This week, the Senate advanced a War Powers Resolution to block further military action in Venezuela by the Trump administration. Ed Markey proudly voted for the resolution as an urgent measure to stop Trump’s aggression.
JD Vance responded by saying that the War Powers Act is “fake.” JD Vance is an idiot, and thankfully, the Vice President doesn’t get to decide what is and isn’t unconstitutional.
The truth is that despite JD’s opinion, the Constitution clearly states that Congress holds the exclusive power to declare war.
The War Powers Act was passed in 1973 to reaffirm that power and to provide a check on the unilateral use of military force by the President. It’s designed to make sure Congress can rein in power hungry, war-mongering Presidents like the one currently in the White House.
So here’s the bottom line: Unless we are attacked, the President MUST get authorization from Congress before sending troops overseas.
But Trump and JD Vance really don’t give a damn about the law or the Constitution, and they are saying it out loud quite clearly. They want to illegally dominate countries like Venezuela or Greenland without Congress or anyone else getting in their way.
It’s authoritarian and violent. It’s a “might makes right” view of the world that should be left in the dustbin of history. And it’s a better reason than any to fight to take back control of Congress from Republicans and ensure our President can no longer act like a King.
If you want to be part of the movement to defend democracy and defeat war-mongering authoritarianism, chip in to Ed Markey’s campaign. Every dollar we raise helps us fight back and lay the groundwork for victory in November and beyond.
