“Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, a month, or a year, it is the struggle of a lifetime. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble.” - Rep. John Lewis

Congressman John Lewis’ passing last Friday was devastating. He was the best of us, a titan of civil rights, and a true hero. We all must commit to fight for racial justice. *Take the pledge here.* ( [link removed] )

Worth a Review: Federal agents attacking protestors
---------------------------------------------------

Imagine attending a peaceful protest against police brutality, and as you’re walking home, an unmarked van pulls up and federal agents in fatigues grab and detain you without cause. This is exactly what happened to Black Lives Matter protestors ( [link removed] ) recently in Portland.
President Trump sent federal officers from the U.S. Marshals Service and Customs and Border Protection to ‘quell violence’ in the city ( [link removed] ) , despite objections from both the mayor of Portland and governor of Oregon. The result has been an escalation of tensions, with at least two demonstrators kidnapped and another hospitalized with skull fractures after being shot with rubber bullets.
Oregon Gov. Kate Brown said ( [link removed] ) Trump’s forced deployment is “a blatant abuse of power by the federal government,” and Jann Carson, interim executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon, called the recent kidnappings “flat-out unconstitutional.” The ACLU has filed multiple lawsuits ( [link removed] ) in Portland and across the country — including suing President Trump himself — to hold law enforcement accountable. Now Trump is sending this federal paramilitary force to Chicago and Albuquerque. He has threatened to do so in other cities “run by very liberal Democrats.”
In the last edition of Worth Fighting For , we took a look at our First Amendment right to peacefully assemble, and how police brutality against protestors and anti-protest legislation are dismantling it — this federal overreach in Portland and in other cities nationwide is yet another attempt to silence the American people and disrupt progress. *Sign our petition today demanding an end to federal agents’ abuse of racial justice protestors.* ( [link removed] )
*Tom’s take:* “We cannot be idle when our constitutional rights are stripped away and lives are destroyed. We must call attention to these violations and fight them at every opportunity. And we must vote to remove this corrupt administration this November to pave the way for stronger protections and participation in our democracy.”
