Sarah Samms Velázquez left Portland, Oregon after prices shot up. She eventually landed in Pittsburgh ([link removed]) , drawn by the river views and anchored by the kindness of its residents.

Now, she watches uneasily as the forces of gentrification that marred her hometown threaten the Pittsburgh she left it for.

“While other homeowners in the neighborhood are excited, I can’t help but be uneasy,” she writes in a first-person essay ([link removed]) . “Knowing that I play a (small) role in the incoming gentrification in Pittsburgh just by moving here, I try my best to keep my footprint as harmless as possible and encourage other newcomers to do the same.”
