Dear John,
In 2025, 32 people died in ICE custody and in the first 7 days of 2026 two citizens were murdered. We mourn the loss of every single life from California to Minneapolis.
We honor the life of Keith Porter, murdered by an off-duty ICE agent outside his Northridge, CA home on New Year's Eve. Keith had two daughters and a community that loved and respected him. Keith’s cousin described the father of two as a “Girl Dad,” and said he was his mother’s only child, who nicknamed him “Pooter” when he was a little boy, and the name stuck.
We honor the life of Renee Nicole Good, a mom who was looking out for her neighbors when ICE shot and killed her in Minneapolis. She was just 37 and the mother of a 6-year-old child. “Poet and writer and wife and mom and shitty guitar strummer from Colorado; experiencing Minneapolis, MN” is how she described herself.
This is what happens when the Trump administration unleashes deputized immigration agents who operate with no clear identification or accountability and that function like a secret police against American cities led by the president’s political opponents. Americans lose their lives.
It is clear that no one, including citizens, are safe from an administration that abuses their power and refuses to respect the basic rule of law.
These actions are distressing and intended to numb us with fear. But we cannot be silent or still.
We must act with courage when they dare to immobilize us. In the spirit of Renee Good, who died living up to the spirit of her name, we pledge to do good for one another.
I will not assist or enable federal agents causing harm and creating chaos in our communities. I will not let them use my place of work or business to park, eat, sleep or use the bathroom.
I will show up courageously, and inspire courage in others by using my voice to speak out against abuse of power in the streets, at the dinner table and online. Sign up to distribute Know-Your-Rights Door hangers to neighbors in LA County.
I will build community and protect my neighbors. I share my money, time, and skills to support those who are under attack. . Donate to our partners, the Coalition of Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) and Black Alliance For Just Immigration (BAJI)
I will boycott any business that funds or enables the bigots, bullies and billionaires funding the violence. Share the pledge with three friends to boycott the corporations colluding with ICE and funding this administrations agenda.
We hold the memories of Keith and Renee to guide us forward in resistance and say their names to bear witness to the cruelty of this administration.
We transform our grief into solidarity. We transform our rage into action, and swear to protect the lives of all our neighbors, no matter the color of our skin or where we come from, no exceptions.
In Solidarity,
We Are California
