John,
By now I’m sure you’ve heard the news, but in case you haven’t, I wanted to make sure you were updated.
On Tuesday, President Trump called on legislators to be “flexible on Hyde” in an effort to reach a deal on healthcare legislation in the new year.
This request from the president is deeply troubling and disappointing. We need leaders who are willing to stand strong in protecting innocent preborn babies from being violently killed through abortion, not leaders who are willing to compromise for temporary victories.
Although the White House has since walked back these comments and House Speaker Mike Johnson has publicly stated that Republicans will not compromise on the Hyde Amendment, we cannot assume these protections are safe.
Just yesterday, a group of 17 Republican representatives voted to extend enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies without explicit Hyde Amendment protections, and this legislation is now heading to the Senate.
Every member of the U.S. Senate who respects human life must ensure no healthcare deal gets through that allows taxpayer funding for abortion!
DEFEND THE HYDE AMENDMENT

First introduced by pro-life Representative Henry Hyde in 1976, the Hyde Amendment protected taxpayers from being forced to directly fund abortions through most federal health programs.
Over the years, it has seen strong public support from both Republicans and Democrats, including even many people who identify as “pro-choice.” In fact, the 2025 Knights of Columbus/Marist poll found that 57% of Americans opposed taxpayer funding for abortion.
Additionally, research estimates that Hyde Amendment protections have saved the lives of over 2 million preborn babies by reducing the number of abortions that would otherwise be funded by the federal government.
To compromise on Hyde would cost the lives of countless innocent preborn children, and it would also be a disastrous step backwards after the enormous victory achieved last summer of defunding Planned Parenthood for one year.
We must make our voices heard and send a clear message to our elected representatives that we do not want any “flexibility” on the Hyde Amendment.
