Dear John,

[Español abajo]

My heart is broken and my spirit is feeling challenged as I communicate to my brothers
and sisters of our great GAMALIEL network, that today January 7th in the morning
another life was stolen on the streets of Minneapolis, Minnesota by brutal actions of ICE
(immigration and customs enforcement) and you probably by now have seen this tragic
event all over the news outlets, so I won't be repeat it again.
These actions perpetrated by ICE under the orders of President Donald Trump, are now
taking the life of U.S.citizens so easily, showing no remorse. Now imagine how
immigrants are being treated when no one is watching.
Who remembers when they said they were coming for criminal immigrants and then
they started taking contributing hard workers, now they are escalating by taking peoples
lives, it has already happened in Illinois, California and now Minnesota.
Now, as chair of the CRI Civil Rights of Immigrants of the GAMALIEL network, I urge
you to join or create your own local CRI, to take action, if you have had enough of this
display of impunity from ICE and their actions.
History repeats itself again, and I quote Lutheran Pastor Martin Niemoller,
“First they came for the Communists and I did not speak out because I was not a
Communist.
Then they came for the Socialists and I did not speak out because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out because I was not a trade
unionist.
Then they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me.”
Sincerely,
Pablo Tapia Mendoza
