Dear neighbor,
This week, our country watched the tragic videos of an ICE agent shooting Renee Nicole Good, an American citizen, in Minneapolis. I am calling on Secretary Noem to resign over her repeated lies about this situation and her disastrous leadership over the Department of Homeland Security. Renee’s family and the American public deserve a full and transparent investigation into this devastating event.
In addition, the Trump Administration has been engaged in an illegal military operation in Venezuela. America is now, in Trump’s words, “running” Venezuela. As healthcare, food, and electricity costs skyrocket, Trump should be focused on helping Americans, not using Venezuela to enrich big oil companies.
This Administration is out of control. Soon this month, Congress will consider Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security spending bills. I will be pushing for bills that put constraints on the Trump Administration and won’t support bills that don’t.
House Democratic veterans are steadfast in calling out this Administration’s unlawful military actions. I joined fellow veterans this week to demand Trump abandon and correct his dangerously misplaced priorities.
While Trump and his rubber-stamp Republicans were using illegal military force in other countries and pre-judging the Minneapolis tragedy, my Democratic colleagues and I were fighting for healthcare.
Yesterday, House Democrats successfully forced a vote and passed an extension of the ACA tax credits to lower healthcare costs. We fought hard for the millions of Americans who saw their healthcare premiums skyrocket in the new year because of Republicans. Our effort isn’t over – the Senate needs to take up this bill NOW.
Additionally, this week marked one year since the Eaton and Palisades fires began last January. I joined fellow California Democratic Members of Congress to demand that federal disaster aid, which Trump promised and lied about, gets delivered to disaster victims immediately. I will not give up on this fight.
Lastly, we commemorated the 5-year anniversary of the January 6 deadly attack on our Capitol this week. On that day 5 years ago, Congressman David Cicilline, Congressman Jamie Raskin, and I drafted the single article of impeachment charging Donald Trump with incitement of insurrection. It passed the House, and I later served as an Impeachment Manager during the Senate trial where 57 Senators voted to convict on a bipartisan basis. While not enough Senate Republicans summoned the courage to convict, our work ensured that the truth was placed permanently in the historical record. No pardon, no lie, and no act of political cowardice can erase what happened on that dark day.
This was a difficult way to start the new year but know this: I will not stop fighting for healthcare, lower costs, and accountability for this Administration’s harmful actions. You deserve better than this insanity.
