Fireside Sessions
I hope everyone had a great holiday season! Welcome back to my weekly update from Washington. This week, I continued my work on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, where we examined serious fraud involving federal childcare and social services programs. In a recent hearing, the Committee exposed an estimated $9 billion in taxpayer dollars that were stolen from programs intended to feed children, support individuals with disabilities, and provide healthcare to vulnerable families. Testimony made clear that repeated warnings were ignored and whistleblowers were silenced, reinforcing why strong congressional oversight is essential to protect taxpayers and ensure federal funds are used for their intended purpose.
I also welcomed the release of the Republican Study Committee (RSC) budget, a serious and responsible roadmap to restoring America’s fiscal health. This budget shows that we can balance the federal budget within ten years without raising taxes or cutting Social Security or Medicare benefits. It returns spending to pre-pandemic levels, strengthens border security and national defense, unleashes American energy production, and eliminates wasteful government programs that do not serve the American people.
I am especially proud that my legislation, H.R. 572, the Regulations Evaluated to Determine the Anticipated Price and Effect Act, known as the RED TAPE Act, is included in the RSC budget. This bill would require federal agencies to rely on qualified, monetary data when conducting cost-benefit analyses for proposed regulations, instead of vague or ideological factors. The goal is simple: reduce unnecessary regulatory burdens and ensure families, farmers, and small businesses are not paying the price for poorly designed rules.
Finally, as a Senior Member of Congress serving on the House Committee on Financial Services, and after more than 27 years of service in the House of Representatives, I remain focused on strengthening our economy and expanding opportunity. This Congress, the Committee has advanced dozens of bills to protect financial privacy, counter China, modernize housing policy, and cut red tape for entrepreneurs and community banks. Together, this work reflects my continued commitment to fiscal discipline, accountability, and policies that put hardworking Americans first.
