Email from Rep. Nehls Rep. Troy E. Nehls Introduces Bill to Protect American Taxpayers Greetings! I wanted to take a moment to share with you a recap of what happened last week in Texas' 22nd District and the United States House of Representatives. Today, January 9, 2026, is National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. As a former law enforcement officer and Sheriff of Fort Bend County, Texas, I know firsthand the sacrifice this job demands. To our men and women in blue, thank you for all you do to keep our communities safe. This Week in Washington D.C. Rep. Troy E. Nehls and Sen. Roger Marshall Introduce the Public Charge Clarification Act of 2025 It's simple—if an alien will be a drain on critical resources that Americans fall back on during hard times, they shouldn't be admissible into our country. That's why this week, I introduced the Public Charge Clarification Act of 2025, legislation that restores the "public charge" ground of inadmissibility in the Immigration and Nationality Act by codifying the core elements of a Proposed Rule put forth by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in 2018. The "public charge" standard was intended to ensure that aliens entering the United States, or attempting to change their immigration status, are self-sufficient and do not rely on public resources for their subsistence. Unfortunately, in 2022, the Biden Administration issued a revision to the Trump Administration’s 2019 “public charge” rule, radically narrowing the definition of a “public charge,” exempting the use of many taxpayer-funded benefits—including most Medicaid benefits, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and vital housing assistance—from consideration in granting permanent residency to aliens. My legislation would, if enacted into law, correct the failures of the Biden Administration by establishing a robust statutory framework for evaluating whether an individual is likely to become a public charge. I'm proud to introduce commonsense legislation that protects hardworking American taxpayers, discourages benefit-seeking immigration, and restores the fundamental requirement that the individuals seeking the privilege of living in our great country must be able to support themselves. Thank you to my Senate colleague, Senator Roger Marshall, for introducing this bill in the Senate, and thank you to my House colleagues who cosponsored my legislation. Nehls Attends House Judiciary Committee Markup This week, I attended the House Judiciary Committee markup, where several bills advanced through the committee: H.R. 6260, Keeping Violent Offenders Off Our Streets Act, brings oversight to bail funds by treating bail bonds as insurance under federal law. This allows states to regulate and license bail funds and applies federal fraud laws to their operations. H.R. 5213, No Federal Funds for Cashless Bail Act, which stops the Attorney General from awarding, renewing, or extending Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grants (Byrne JAG) from going to states and cities that limit cash bail for people charged with violent or serious crimes. H.R. 6622, Sunshine for Regulatory Decrees and Settlements Act, will bring transparency to backroom “sue-and-settle” deals and ensure federal agencies follow the law when issuing regulations. H.R. 2641, Day 1, Dollar 1 E-Verify Act, requires federal contractors to use E-Verify so taxpayer dollars only support legal hiring practices. Together, the bills advanced send a clear message that violent criminals shouldn’t be released back onto our streets, soft-on-crime policies shouldn't be rewarded, federal agencies shouldn’t make rules behind closed doors, and taxpayer dollars shouldn’t support illegal hiring. Rep. Troy E. Nehls Votes "YES" to Pass H.R. 6938, the Commerce, Justice, Science; Energy and Water Development; and Interior and Environment Appropriations Act of 2026 My House Republican colleagues and I passed a package of three appropriations bills this week that further President Trump's agenda and implement real spending cuts for hardworking Americans. H.R. 6938, the Commerce, Justice, Science; Energy and Water Development; and Interior and Environment Appropriations Act of Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 provides federal appropriations through FY 2026 and supports efforts to strengthen our nation's energy security, secure our communities, reduce bureaucratic red tape, advance critical programs, and implement President Trump's America first agenda. Specifically, H.R. 6938 supports our nation's law enforcement and the important fight against illicit drugs like fentanyl, unleashes American energy dominance and strengthens nuclear deterrence, and supports the stewardship of our country's resources. We are moving full steam ahead with the FY 2026 appropriations process, delivering real, incremental gains and breaking the failed status quo of the past. Rep. Troy E. Nehls Votes “YES” to Pass Bills That Address Housing Affordability and Consumer Choice This week, I voted "YES" for H.R. 5184, the Affordable Homes Over Mandating Efficiency Standards (Affordable HOMES) Act, to make housing more affordable for hardworking Americans. For years, manufactured home builders have been confused, navigating repetitive and conflicting federal regulations, including energy standards mandated by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, which were designed for site-built homes, not manufactured housing. These mismatched rules create confusion, delay construction, and drive up costs for families trying to buy an affordable home. The Affordable HOMES Act eliminates redundant requirements, preserves the Department of Urban Housing and Development's (HUD) long-standing authority over manufactured housing, and allows coordination where appropriate. By streamlining the regulatory process, this bill lowers housing costs, increasing access to affordable homeownership, allowing hardworking Americans to achieve the American dream. This Week in Texas' 22nd District Assistance for Veterans and Military Families Veterans, service members, and their families in Texas’ 22nd Congressional District deserve timely access to the benefits and services they have earned through their service to our nation. My district office is committed to assisting constituents who are experiencing challenges with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). We can provide assistance with VA disability compensation and pension claims, health care access, education benefits, survivor benefits, and cases involving significant delays or administrative issues. While a congressional office cannot alter VA decisions or provide legal counsel, we can submit formal inquiries, request case updates, and work directly with the VA to help ensure matters are reviewed thoroughly and efficiently. Veterans and their families who need assistance with a VA-related issue are encouraged to contact my district office. It is my privilege to serve those who have honorably served the United States. If you need assistance, please contact our District Office at 346-762-6600 or visit our website.
