Dear Friend,

On Wednesday, an ICE officer shot and killed immigrant rights advocate and LGBTQ community member Renee Nicole Good. At the time, she was acting as a legal observer, documenting interactions between protesters and law enforcement to help protect First Amendment rights. We honor and mourn Renee - and hold her wife, her children, and all who loved her in our hearts during this time of profound loss.

One day after ICE killed Rene, CBP shot and wounded two Venezuelan immigrants, identified as Luis David Nico Moncada and Yorlenys Betzabeth Zambrano-Contreras. While details are still emerging, what is clear is that these acts of violence underscore a deeply troubling reality; immigration enforcement is becoming increasingly militarized, reckless, and deadly.

As you may know, Renee was not an immigrant herself. She was a member of the LGBTQ community who stood up in defense of immigrants. For those of us doing this work, her death is just one more horrific step that DHS has taken to attack our communities. We also mourn the mounting numbers of immigrants and asylum seekers who have perished in ICE custody. Together, these deaths mark an unacceptable escalation of government violence.

Now is the time to step up and speak out. The success of Immigration Equality’s mission has always depended on a wide variety of activists and supporters, many of whom are not LGBTQ or immigrants themselves. Even though this fight has become more fraught with danger, we ask that you refuse to allow fear to fracture our solidarity. Let us hold one another close in this moment and stand with immigrants, defend democracy, and refuse to tolerate injustice.

With grief, anger, and determination,

Immigration Equality
