The Tax Equity Funders Network and Prosperity Now are hosting a timely discussion with practitioners and philanthropic leaders focused on recent shifts in the no-cost tax return preparation landscape and what those changes mean for funders supporting this work.

As demand for no-cost tax preparation continues to exceed supply, many providers are operating with limited staffing, constrained resources, and increased complexity in filing requirements. At the same time, changes in IRS capacity and uncertainty around the availability and scope of tools such as Direct File have affected how taxpayers navigate filing options, placing additional pressure on community-based programs.

This conversation will examine why no-cost, high-quality tax return preparation services, including VITA, remain a critical part of the tax filing system and how philanthropic support can help sustain service quality, manage risk, and maintain access for households who rely on these programs. Participants will also learn how Prosperity Now’s Tax Opportunity Network (TON) supports coordination, technical assistance, and shared learning across providers.
