Hi friend,

There is no easy way to acknowledge what happened in Minneapolis on Wednesday, but I would be remiss not to honor Renee Nicole Good or reinforce our commitment as lawyers to protect civil rights.

Two days ago, Renee Nicole Good was killed during an encounter with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis. ([link removed]) Wednesday, January 7, 2026 should have been a normal day. Like most mornings, Good dropped off her six-year-old son at school and headed home. But she never made it back. Renee Nicole Good died because she exercised her right to observe a group of ICE agents in her neighborhood.

We The Action believes in civil rights — and in the power of the legal profession to protect them. The path ahead is uncertain, but one thing remains clear: we will stand firm and continue to do everything in our power to mobilize lawyers to use their skills and expertise to safeguard civil rights, protect vulnerable individuals and communities, and uphold our democracy.

As we process this moment and where we are as a nation, many of us may be asking, “What now?” Our first step is to honor Good and the many others working to protect our communities. The grief in the wake of Good’s death is immense: Three children lost their mother. A wife lost her partner. Parents lost their daughter. Siblings lost their sister. A community lost their neighbor. Immigrants lost one of their steadfast protectors.

If you are looking for other ways to get involved, you can use your skills to carry on the work of protecting our civil rights by signing up for a pro bono project. ([link removed]) Today, as a community, we dedicate our work to Renee’s life, legacy, and right to observe.

No matter what the future holds, we will keep working to advance justice — together. Thank you for being with us.

In solidarity and remembrance,
Anna
