Renee Nicole Good should be alive today.
What we all saw on video out of Minneapolis this week makes my blood run cold. A person attempting to leave was shot and killed at point-blank range. We don’t need to know anything else about Renee Good to know this: She was a human being, and she did not have to die.
I come from a family of law enforcement, so I understand how split-second decisions can be second-guessed after the fact. That is why police are afforded broad legal protections.
This is not that.
Responsibility for this killing rests with the agent who fired the shot and — by definition — the Trump administration. By standing up a paramilitary force, telling agents to wear masks and civilian clothes, and sending them into our cities to round up peaceful neighbors, the administration provided both the tinder and the spark.
They have made completely unnecessary deaths inevitable. This may be the first being broadly reported, but it will not be the last. Just yesterday, Border Patrol agents in Portland, Oregon shot two people who are currently hospitalized.
This is not law and order — it’s tyranny.
What’s more, the decision by DHS Secretary Kristi Noem and Stephen Miller to lie to the American people about what we can plainly see shows a complete lack of remorse.
Unlike the Trump administration, I will not throw around the phrase “domestic terrorist” lightly. But I will say this: if you claim to have a video of a domestic terrorist, and that video shows a masked man firing into a car at point-blank range, I would surely not assume you were describing the person behind the wheel.
Holding this administration morally accountable is not an incitement to violence. I am not calling for more tragedy. We have already seen far too much.
I am calling on Americans of good conscience to believe their own eyes and demand action to ensure this never happens again.
May Renee’s memory be a blessing and her tragic loss be a call to action:
Impeach Kristi Noem. Abolish ICE. Mobilize to overcome Trump's tyranny.
The legitimate safety work of HSI (Homeland Security Investigations) happened before ICE, and can exist in a future without the rot of what has become Trump’s paramilitary force.
The future of our country depends on it.
