The Trump Administration is trying to interfere in Wisconsin's election's process. We're in court to stop them.

Friend –

On behalf of Common Cause and three Wisconsin voters, we joined Law Forward and the national ACLU to intervene in the Trump administration's lawsuit against the Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC) over its refusal to hand over confidential information about registered state voters.

In December, the Trump administration sued WEC after the agency rejected a request from the U.S. Justice Department to obtain access to Wisconsin's full voter file, which includes highly sensitive personal information like driver's license numbers and partial social security numbers. That data is protected under state and federal privacy laws and cannot be disclosed simply because the federal government asks for it.

This is another brazen attempt by the Trump regime to unlawfully intrude in a state's election system for the purposes of promoting baseless conspiracies that erode public trust and make it harder to vote. But we will not let them come in, break the law, and abuse their power without a fight.

This litigation is particularly important because the administration's actions jeopardize the voting and privacy rights of all Wisconsin voters. The Trump regime could try to use this data to disenfranchise historically marginalized voters, including naturalized citizens and individuals with a prior felony conviction who have since regained their right to vote.

If the Department of Justice (DOJ) lawsuit is successful, we could also see a significant breach of sensitive personal information. If the Trump administration accomplishes its goal to build a national voter database – giving them access to millions of Americans' data without guardrails – there is no telling what they could do with it.

Ultimately, that is why we are here, day and night, fighting for what is right. We do not shy away from anyone or anything, whether it is the DOJ or the President of the United States. When it comes to defending voting rights, safeguarding privacy, and protecting our rights and freedoms, we will not give in.

In solidarity,

ACLU of Wisconsin
