John,
Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen a disturbing pattern of federal immigration enforcement operating with little transparency and even less accountability.
Just days ago in Minnesota, a routine traffic stop by ICE agents turned tragic. A woman was killed, and serious questions remain about why ICE was involved at all, whether proper authority was exercised, and why agents operated without the basic safeguards Americans expect from law enforcement. The ICE agent should be arrested and put on trial.
The American people didn’t vote for ICE to harass U.S. citizens, especially not without oversight, body cams, or accountability. They didn’t vote for ICE to violate people’s constitutional rights or their dignity.
That’s why I’ve introduced a House Resolution to hold ICE and CBP accountable and bring basic transparency, professionalism, and oversight to immigration enforcement.
My resolution, co-sponsored by Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton and Reps. Jonathan Jackson and Jasmine Crockett, calls for:
✅ Mandatory body cameras for ICE and CBP agents
✅ No more masks except in genuine safety emergencies
✅ Independent civilian review boards to investigate misconduct
✅ Transferring ICE oversight to the Department of Justice for proper accountability
As I told CBS News [[link removed]] :
“This is about respecting law enforcement as professionals — but holding them to high professional standards. We should hold ICE officers to the same level of transparency and accountability we expect of police officers or FBI agents.”
What happened in Minnesota underscores what Americans have been saying for years: when agencies operate without oversight, people get hurt.

This isn’t about partisanship; it’s about protecting both public trust and officer safety.
I unequivocally condemn threats and violence against ICE agents. But accountability and transparency make law enforcement stronger, not weaker.
Together, we can restore public confidence and ensure that no federal agency operates above the law.
