Friend,
This week, my city of Minneapolis has seen chaos, tragedy, and an
outpouring of support and solidarity.
Just six short years ago, my community witnessed the murder of
George Floyd in Minneapolis. In his memory, millions around the
country rose up for justice. This week, many have asked how they can
take action after ICE’s killing of Renee Nicole Good.
As we have for generations, as we did in 2020, and as we
have through Trump’s administration, we are ready to rise
up.
That’s the message in this moving piece from Beth Gendler, the
executive director of Jewish Community Action in Minnesota: “The
ICE shooting in Minneapolis shattered my Holocaust survivor father’s
American dream.”
And it’s why we’re gathering in our communities all across the
country: Find
an ICE Out For Good event near you this weekend.
We know that for
some people, taking action on Shabbat is part of their Jewish practice
while others are unable to do so. Please do whatever feels right for
you.
We believe what we see with our eyes. No
matter the brazen lies politicians spew, we know we watched a
murder.
Renee Nicole Good’s horrific murder was
no isolated incident. It’s a continuation of Trump’s cruel,
lethal immigration agenda that sends masked agents to
terrorize our streets and ravage our communities. It’s a continuation
of the same violent, unaccountable law enforcement systems that killed
George Floyd just blocks away six years ago. And it’s the same system
that led ICE to shoot and injure two more community members in
Portland just last night.
But our response is also a
continuation — a continuation of our Jewish tradition of fighting
back. From our ancestors rising up against injustice, to
Black Lives Matter, to defeating Trump, our community of Jews and
allies has been in this fight for generations.
Many of our parents, grandparents, or
ancestors experienced violence as immigrants and allies. In their
spirit, and to honor Renee Nicole Good and all who have lost their
lives at the hands of ICE and CBP brutality, we will continue
to fight back.
