Dear John,
For months, I – along with many of my fellow elected officials, law enforcement agencies and community members – have warned of the dangers of the Trump Administration’s chaotic, reckless and unnecessary mass ICE operations in our cities.
On Wednesday, our worst fears became reality. My heart breaks for Renee Good’s family, particularly the children she leaves behind – whose toys were seen in the passenger seat of the car she died in. Her death was unnecessary and heartbreaking.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has done nothing but spread lies about the incident – even going so far as to label Ms. Good as a domestic terrorist.
We all saw the video.
That’s exactly why Secretary Noem has barred the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension from participating in the investigation of Ms. Good’s death. Minnesotans deserve an independent and transparent investigation.
President Trump and his Administration will try to justify their meddling in Minnesota – they will continue to lie and say it’s about keeping folks safe – but Minnesotans know this isn’t true. It’s a political stunt targeting blue states and specifically, Minnesota.
These actions aren’t about keeping people safe. They are not about catching violent criminals. They are about weaponizing our immigration system for political purposes and using immigrant communities as political pawns.
We are a nation of immigrants. Immigrants are essential members of our communities. They make up the fabric of our state – and they make us stronger. In Minnesota, we welcome immigrants. The cruelty we are witnessing has no place in our beautiful state.
As our community mourns and heals from this horrific tragedy, I urge you to look out for your neighbors and stay peaceful. Take care of yourselves, and take care of one another. And to my fellow Minnesotans, know that I am fighting this cruel Administration at every turn. I am determined to help hold Secretary Noem and this Administration accountable for her recklessness, and to continue to advocate for sensible immigration policies in our nation.
Until next time,
Angie Craig
Member of Congress
