In light of the current crackdown on press freedom — demonstrated by the increasingly red map of press freedom abuses around the world — RSF is determined to continue its fight for your right to reliable information, as it has done for the last 40 years. At a time when global geopolitics is characterised by instability and the questioning of international law, free and independent reporting is vital. As 2026 begins, numerous struggles await: the restrictions still in place in Gaza; the continuous attacks on the press under President Trump; the safety of journalists in Venezuela, Iran, the Sahel region, Ukraine and China, to name just a few places. With you by our side, RSF will continue fighting for press freedom and the right to information with high standards, independence and determination. |

| | Venezuela: press freedom has never been so important Around 200 foreign journalists are waiting in Colombia for the right to enter Venezuelan territory, where press freedom has dramatically deteriorated over the last few days. Given it’s essential that the world understands what’s happening in Venezuela as a result of the illegal intervention by the U.S., the authorities must allow foreign journalists to enter the country and put an end to its restrictions on local media outlets. |

| | India: legal persecution by the Adani group For several years now, the Adani group, an Indian conglomerate run by the billionaire Gautam Adani, has been making a name for itself through its particularly aggressive stance towards journalists. The group is responsible for numerous lawsuits — all of them costly and long — that are part of an attempt to silence critical voices, including some of the most respected journalists in India. |

| | General elections in Uganda: at least five journalists injured As the general elections scheduled for 15 January approach, violence against journalists and restrictions on media outlets in Uganda are intensifying. In one case, while covering a rally by opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, journalist Ivan Mbadhi of the private television channel BBS was assaulted by police officers that he had filmed spraying tear gas into his colleagues' news van. |

| | Peru: murders of four journalists met with silence by the authorities
In the month of December alone, journalists Mitzar Castillejos Tenezoa and Juan Fernando Nunez Guevara were assassinated and Anthony Rumiche Rodriguez was the victim of an assassination attempt in Peru. After the country’s most deadly year for journalists in at least 30 years, the absence of an official reaction from the Peruvian authorities is further encouraging a concerning culture of impunity. |

| | The expansion of Chinese propaganda in Tibet The Chinese public radio broadcaster, China National Radio (CNR), has expanded its Tibetan-language programming, increasing its presence in the daily life of Tibetan communities. In so doing, the Chinese regime has begun filling the void left by the closure of Tibetan-language services provided by Radio Free Asia (RFA) and Voice of America (VOA), significantly reducing the availability of reliable and diverse information in Tibet, as well as in what is the world's largest prison for journalists. |

| Honneur-David Safari, the editor-in-chief of the press group, La Prunelle RDC, has been found alive after being kidnapped in Bukavu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He was nevertheless violently tortured and has had to be hospitalised. We called on the leaders of the Congo River Alliance (AFC)/March 23 Movement (M23) coalition, controlling the capital of South Kivu, to shed light on this serious attack without delay. |

With a cover and illustrations by Lebanese artist Christina Atik, RSF’s 2025 annual press freedom round-up revealed that, as of 5 December 2025, 67 journalists had been killed and 503 were in detention around the world. In many countries, journalists covering protests were also obstructed from carrying out their work — notably in Nepal, Serbia and Indonesia. The report also highlights the growing number of journalists forced into exile as a result of conflict and repressive policies. |
