New reporting out of Ukraine sheds light on the life-threatening conditions facing health workers and the women and girls they care for. Giving birth under air raid sirens is now a nightmarish reality for mothers across the war-torn region.

Anastasiia was evacuated to Kharkiv to safely deliver premature twins in a perinatal center. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of medical staff, both she and her twin boys are now in stable condition.

In frontline Kharkiv, protected maternity wards are helping women like Anastasiia give birth safely, even as war continues just miles away.

Despite some relief, the stress of war is never far away. “There have been missile strikes across our region — and they continue. Every day brings stress,” Anastasiia shared. “Even if there’s no immediate strike, the fighting nearby is loud and constant.”

Doctors, midwives, and nurses work against a backdrop of constant alarms and explosions. These brave healthcare workers are putting their lives on the line to ensure pregnant women in Ukraine are able to meet their babies.

“You just do what you have to do to save a life, to save the future. In such moments, you only think about saving a life. We work [in these conditions] because life must always prevail,” said a doctor in eastern Ukraine.
