John,
I am devastated and infuriated by ICE’s killing of Renee Nicole Good in Minnesota. My heart is with her children, her loved ones, and the community now forced to grieve a life taken far too soon. I’m also heartbroken for the families being ripped apart by ICE’s brutal tactics in Minnesota, here in Colorado, and across the country.
Renee’s death is the direct consequence of an administration that has normalized brutality, dehumanization, and unchecked power. This is not normal.
No one should be living with the fear of being ripped apart from their loved ones for potentially documenting ICE activity or due to their immigration status.
They want us scared, isolated, and silent; but I refuse to accept it.
The Constitution protects us ALL, regardless of where we were born or how much money is in our bank account.
In these times, it’s important to KNOW YOUR RIGHTS and use them!
-In an encounter with an officer, ask: “Am I free to leave?”
-If you are being detained, say: “I am going to remain silent.”
-If the officer asks you to identify yourself: “My name is [First and Last Name], and my date of birth is [MM/DD/YYYY].”
-Say: “I do not consent to a search.”
-Say: “I want to speak to an attorney.”
See something? Say something! Save the Colorado Rapid Response Network into your phone to report ICE Activity: 844-864-8341
It is critical that we show up for each other and speak out as we continue to be targeted by extremists. Consider getting involved with or donating to Colorado Rapid Response Network by going to coloradorapidresponsenetwork.com.
My heart is with you, always, because nobody’s gonna save us but us. Please remember that you are not alone and we will not stop fighting for justice, dignity, and freedom until it is a reality for all of us.
En solidaridad,
Julie Gonzales
