John,
15 years ago, while I was training for a shuttle mission, I got the phone call that Gabby was shot.
It was a punch in the gut like nothing I’ve ever felt before.
She survived, but six were killed and another twelve wounded. Our lives changed forever.
Since that day, and over the last few years especially, political violence has only gotten worse. It’s hard to know exactly what to do to stop it. But each of us has a choice:
Am I going to try to make things better, or worse?
For my part, the answer is easy. I am going to continue to try to bring people together instead of apart. That doesn’t mean I won’t disagree, and it certainly doesn’t mean I won’t fight for what I believe in.
We have to, for the sake of our kids and our grandkids.
Gabby’s example of courage, kindness, and hope in spite of everything that's been thrown at her keeps me going every day. And if you’re ever feeling like you don’t know how, believe me: Listen to her.
She’s pretty smart.
Thank you,
Mark
