BREAKING NEWS: The House just voted for the Democrats’ 3-year extension of tax credits for Affordable Care Act plans — after 17 Republicans worried about their reelection prospects decided to join Democrats in forcing a vote.
Brian Fitzpatrick, Mike Lawler, Rob Bresnahan and Ryan Mackenzie made a big deal about signing a discharge petition to force a vote on health care subsidies…but not until it was too late and the damage was done.
Republicans in Congress have driven health care premiums sky-high — doubling costs for millions — and it’s almost like they don’t care if voters punish them for it. They’re treating gutting coverage as policy theater, not a catastrophe for families, but rest assured voters will see that wrecking people’s health care won’t be the political win they imagine.
Those same Republicans could have decided to jump on board earlier but they didn’t and then they all went on vacation on December 19. They could have prevented the sticker shock millions of people faced on January 1 when their premiums spiked by 114% on average, or over $1,000 for some.
The majority of the House GOP voted to raise the price of health care, including vulnerable Republicans like:

This vote came after people already had to make the decision of whether to pay the rent or mortgage or their health insurance. After their lives were thrown into chaos. And, in many states, open enrollment is ending. So even if the GOP Senate gets its act together and passes the same bill to restore the credits — a really big if — people who dropped their insurance could be locked out because enrollments have closed.
About the GOP-controlled Senate — they are showing no signs at all of willingness to go along with the House. That makes this last minute reversal by so-called moderate House Republicans even more hollow — they could force this vote knowing it would go nowhere and then campaign on it.
Too damned little, and way too damned late.
We’re not going to let them get away with it. We recorded which House Republicans voted against extending these tax credits, and we’re going to make sure voters know about it. The same goes for Senate Republicans who are continuing to play games with your health and lives.
As Republicans keep siding with wealthy interests over everyday families, we will expose them, follow their every move, and work harder all year to build a coalition of voters who will fire them during the midterms.
American Bridge 21st Century exists to hold Republicans accountable. Our research and tracking teams are already compiling footage and records from this vote so voters know exactly who put ideology ahead of people’s health and pocketbooks. Your support powers that work — the tracking, the rapid response ads, the outreach that turns facts into action.
Will you chip in to fuel our response efforts and make sure voters never forget who voted to endanger their lives without a shred of remorse? [[link removed]]
